Taiwan's last sword-maker - 07 Jan 10

Akashic

Once considered divine, the centuries-old craft of sword-making in Taiwan is dying.

But one individual is doing his best to keep the ancient tradition alive.

Al Jazeera's Steve Chao travelled to the town of Cheding to meet the country's last professional sword-maker, who at 65, hopes to find a "worthy apprentice" to pass his legacy on to.

I want one of those blades.

Would be a nice idea, but might be a bit too old.

He started at the thirteen...wow.

I bet you'd have more passion for this than most thirteen-year-olds... ;-)

I certainly would, but the apprenticeship would probably be decades and a younger guy would be preferable.

Pity he could not find one of his relatives.

Hopefully he will be able to pass his skills on.

Well, he seems to be an energetic guy who probably has more than a decade left, so there's still a chance.
